The Bear’s Web Pre-Teen Program offers a place for growing youth to explore who they are while staying grounded in connection—with themselves, each other, and Land. This age brings big changes: new emotions, social dynamics, and the first steps into independence. Our program provides a steady, caring environment where pre-teens can stretch, stumble, laugh, and discover—without the pressure to already know who they are.
At a time when many feel caught between childhood and adolescence, we create space where kids can still play, imagine, and explore, while also being taken seriously. We honor their questions and creativity, and offer meaningful experiences that build confidence, communication skills, and a deeper sense of belonging.
Our approach is rooted in Coyote Teaching—a way of mentoring that follows the child’s curiosity while quietly guiding them toward discovery and growth. We hike, build shelters, track animals, make fires, solve group challenges, and reflect on what these experiences teach us about ourselves and the world. Even our games are filled with invisible lessons—cooperation, observation, problem-solving—even if it just feels like fun.
Pre-teens also begin to face social pressures—fitting in, self-doubt, changing friendships. Instructors are trained to recognize these shifts and respond with care. We foster a culture of inclusion, listening, and respect. We celebrate each student’s strengths, and gently invite them to try new things and take leadership when they’re ready. We spend one-on-one time with students when needed, and always seek to build a sense of trust and community where everyone feels seen and valued.
This is whole-person learning—engaging heart, mind, body, and spirit. It’s playful, purposeful, and rooted in relationship with Land. We care for Earth because we know we are part of Her—and we care for each other because we are growing together.
Our summer backpacking trips offer pre-teens a powerful blend of adventure, independence, and connection—with Land, self, and community. Away from screens and schedules, they learn to carry what they need, care for one another, and find confidence in their own strength. Guided by nurturing mentors, each journey is filled with wonder, laughter, challenge, and the kind of growth that lasts long after the trail ends.
Our year-round mentorship program offers pre-teens a steady rhythm of connection—with Land, peers, and trusted guides. Through seasonal adventures, playful learning, and deepening relationships, kids gain confidence, emotional resilience, and a growing sense of belonging. It's not just about skills—it’s about being seen, supported, and rooted as they grow into who they are becoming.
